Abstract
This text addresses the challenge of social inclusion for people with disabilities in contemporary societies, highlighting sport as a fundamental tool to overcome persistent structural and attitudinal barriers. Despite international (UN) and national (Spain) regulatory advances, effective community participation remains an unattained goal, with many people with disabilities living in a "distinct social space" that limits their rights and autonomy. In this context, the Mixed Ability (MA) model is presented as an innovative approach that promotes the joint participation of people with and without disabilities in mainstream sports, without the need for adaptations or classifications. Its pillars are self-determination, equality among teammates—who do not act as volunteers—and the breakdown of the "us and them" dichotomy. Scientific evidence supports its benefits at the individual level (improved health and self-esteem), institutional level (more inclusive club cultures), and community level (a shift in social perceptions of disability).Although its implementation in Spain is limited, the model has gained visibility through events like the IMART rugby tournament. The upcoming edition in Pamplona in 2025 represents a key opportunity to consolidate and expand this approach, fostering structural change towards a truly accessible and equitable sports landscape.
