Abstract

Pulsioximetry has been validated as a very reliable non-invasive technique to assess arterial saturation (SaO2). Our aim was to study the variations of SaO2 during aerobic exercise in different groups of women: pre- and post-menopausal. Arterial desaturation was classified as light, moderate, and serious. Thirty-one sedentary women gave their consent to participate voluntarily in this study and were divided into two groups: pre-and post-menopausal. We measured SaO2 during a 60-minute session of aerobic dance, every 15 minutes, to determine the level of each participants arterial desaturation. At rest, no significant differences in SaO2 between groups were observed. However, the pre-menopausal group had a higher frequency of normal SaO2 (92.3%) than post-menopausal women (66.7%). Light arterial desaturation was less frequent in pre (7.7%) than post-menopausal (27.8%) women. Moderate levels of desaturation were only observed in post-menopausal women (5.6%). In conclusion, post-menopausal women experience more arterial desaturation than pre-menopausal women during aerobic exercise. Pulsioximetry and arterial desaturation evaluation may be a useful tool for post-menopausal women, who suffer more desaturation, in order to detect high intensities when other means are not available, both due to its relationship with lactate production as well as being a very simple and non-invasive technique.
