Resumen

It is argued that early retirement experience is mainly a socio-psychological event. Inorder to explore the status of both national and international research in this area, we firstcarried out a biblio-metrical analysis. The evolution of the number of documents publishedby year, the main sources and the nuclei of research are shown, and variables related to earlyretirement experience are identified. Next, we try to define accurately the heterogeneous con-cept of early retirement, highlighting its ambiguities. Finally, we expound orientations todevelop a conceptual framework useful to do research on early retirement. Thus, we show itsrequirements and put forward a theoretical proposal based on data from biblio-metricalanalysis. Four levels of analysis -social, organizational, psychosocial and psychological- andfour phases are identified. We also make a distinction in incidence variables according totheir function as antecedents, modulators or consequents of early retirement. Finally, specialattention is paid to consequences of early retirement from a critical point of view.
