Estrategias utilizadas por estudiantes universitarios en el aprendizaje de la lengua extranjera según el género y nivel de competencia

Abstract

The main objectives of the study are 1) to analyze the language learning strategy use in foreign language learning between female and male students, 2) to compare language learning strategies employed between genders and proficiency, and 3) to identify the particular strategies with a statistically significant difference between higher proficient males and females with different proficiency levels. Data collection method used has been a questionnaire based on SILL-Strategy Inventory for Language Learning (Oxford, 1990). The scores on English test were used to measure language learning proficiency. The participants were 135 university students. The results show that higher proficient females used significantly more often memory, cognitive, metacognitive and affective strategies than males.
