Abstract
An exploratory-descriptive study, within a qualitative approach, has been carried out, based onaction research methodology through focus groups, in order to know the opinion of the Spanish music therapists about the situation of music therapy in Spain, specifically the research field. A categorization of subjects and contents following the procedure of Grounded Theory (Glaser & Strauss, 1967) has been accomplished, using the NVIVO 10 computer program. Likewise, a SWOT analysis has been performed and the possible strategies in order to consolidate music therapy as a profession and scientific discipline in Spain have been identified. The analysis of the focus groups reveals the difficulty to address in depth the issues regarding the current status of music therapy research in Spain. The main issues mentioned were: professionalization (52%), followed by education (20%), research (19%) and clinical practice (9%) in music therapy in Spain.
