Abstract

The present work aims to present the preliminary results obtained after the creation and start-up of a Free Elective Course in Emotional Education for students of the first year of Secondary Education in the region of Castilla y León (Spain). This report gives a brief overview about the need to implement lessons on emotional intelligence and the development of emotional competencies in the Education System as an educational preventative measure. In addition, it explains the used approach to incorporating the Free Elective Course ―Emotional, Social and Creative Education‖ in a countryside Secondary School of Valladolid, showing the results obtained during the first quarter of the school year. Although it is too soon to give strong conclusions about this work, we have begun to observe the direct relationship between working on emotional skills and academic performance. Longterm studies must be performed to completely understand the implications of incorporating this subject to the syllabus.
